when I go to start-control panel, control panel opens but I can't open any thing in it and in [my documents] nothing will open but when you double click something the windows icon disappears and a blue and white box takes its place and if I do ctrl/alt/delete it shows that the file I tried to open is running but it's not. any help is appreciated. Welcome to the board tomrooster...

There is a virus are two that will cause symptoms like that, so if you haven't an updated antivirus scanner to run, you can do an online one here:

    http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/

If the Blebla worm is found, there will be some further work to be done to repair the registry.

Let us know what Windows version you are running and whether (if no virus is found) the same problems occur in safe mode.

To start in safe mode, repeatedly tap the f8 key as soon as the computer begins booting. Select safe mode from the Boot Menu which should appear.

Did you do the virus scan?

A jpg.exe file definitely suggests that you may have one or more.

Registry corruption caused by a virus can prevent things from working in safe mode as well as normal.

When did this behavior begin? If less than 5 days ago we may be able to affect some repair by restoring a previous registry (if you have Win98 or ME).

Sorry, I'm not quite clear by what you meant when you said you "downloaded" a virus scanner but can't find it. Did you try the online scanner above and it didn't find any virus, or you tried to download and install something, but couldn't find the download?

Do a Find Files search for *.cpl

Double click on each one that is in the Windows\system directory.

Do they all open their respective applets?

Are you having problems running all exe files?

If so try downloading and running the exefix08 file from the site below. If you need an unzipped version use the ONLY IE link at the very bottom of the page.

    http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html

Don't try to open any file like jpg.exe ... it won't be a legitimate one.

    TR,

    >> can you run any exe files, or just not some specific ones?

    >> have you tried finding and double clicking individual .cpl files as indicated in the troubleshooting article? If just one fails to open it could cause the Control Panel problem.

    >> Now download and run the Startuplog.com file from the last link.

It will place a Startuplog.txt file on your desktop. With that file open, right click on it. click "select all", then right click and "copy"

Then in you next post here, right click on the message box and select "paste" to copy the results here. The stubbpaths.txt is not needed.

This doesn't look too promissing tomrooster. Kak is there all right, but normally it alone doesn't cause the kind of damage you seem to have.

If you go to start and run regedit, does the registry editor open?

Or do you get a "cannot find file..." message?

See if Symantec's online scanner will run for you:

    http://security2.norton.com/us/home.asp?j=1&&plfid=20&plfid=20&pkj=PZQVKZWCGZYFVHDYKDB

Click the "scan for viruses" link
