    Hi Guys,
I think i've got the Qhosts trojan virus.I did a virus scan with pc-cillan nothing came up. I used the qhosts scan / fix by symantec - it found nothing. I did a maunal removal and found the "hosts" file and deleted the corresponding lines (eg <IP address specified in the batch file> www.google.com ).

In the registry only a couple of the registry entries were there, so I couldn't delete or modify much in there.

when I did that I got google working again! but I still have 2 more problems......

    1. when I hit the internet explorer icon to bring up a webpage or my startpage, down in the bottom left corner it says "detecting Proxy settings.....". This takes a good 4 to 5 minutes to load in a webpage!

    2. msn messenger will not sign in either. It just tries to sign in but takes 2-3 mins and does nothing. No error messages either.just returns to the sign in area.

Is this part of the qhost virus?

what do I do now? Any advice?

    Uly

Sounds like you need to change your connection settings.

    Try this:

Go into Internet Options via the control panel, and click on the connections tab, then click the settings button and make sure the "Use a proxy server" button is unchecked and the "Automatically detect settings" button is checked.

Lets take a look at whats going on.

Go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

    Restart your computer.

Go here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ and download Adaware 6

Install the program and launch it.

I strongly recommend that you read the help file to familiarize yourself with the program.

Before running the scan look at the top of the main window and you will see a Gear Icon. This is where you configure the settings. Click on that and then in the next window that pops up click on the "Scanning" tab on the left side. Under "Drives and Folders" put a check by "Scan within archives" and below that under "Memory and Registry" put a check by all the options there.
The click on the "Tweak" tab and under "Scanning engine" put a check by "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then......under "Cleaning engine" put a ckeck by "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot" then click "Proceed"

Next in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on "Check for updates now" and get the latest referencefiles.
After getting the latest referencefiles you are ready to scan.

Click "Start" and in the next window make sure "Active in depth scanning" is checked then click "Next" and the scan will begin.

When it is finished let it fix everything it finds.

    Restart your computer.

Then go here http://spybot.eon.net.au/index.php?lang=en&page=download and download Spybot.

Install the program and launch it.

Before scanning press "Online" and "Search for Updates" .

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click "Check for Problems" and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds.

    Restart your computer.

In your Connections Settings, is there any indication of a "use automatic configuration script" being pointed to? Does it make any difference if "automatically detect settings" is checked or unchecked?

Also there is no reason to leave the hosts file in place at all. Just delete it or rename it ghosts.

Good to hear. It's one of those 'no accounting for Windows' problems. I found a lot of google groups hits for the same problem, seemed that worked for some and not for others. It really shouldn't matter, but there is probably some hidden registry setting we don't know about that has been changed.
