I just recieved a compaq presario running Win98 with an error message stating: PRGRAM:C:\PROGRAM FILES\EARTHLINK TOTALACCESS\TASKPANL.EXE, with this stated below the message in the same window: The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. The customer does not use earthlink, so the I unistalled the software. Although this not a WinXP computer is it still possible that it has the W32.Spybot.Worm virus? And what can I do to remove the problem. I can not establish an internet connection through earthlink. The modem will not even detect a dial tone. But trying to connect through another service is just fine, dial tone and all. The connection that does work will not bring up any web pages, keep getting the page cannot be found message. I was told to run hijack and did. Here are my results, now what. Someone please help.

There is nothing there associated with w32.spybot

However, you might want to remove these

Restart Hijack this and put a check mark against the following

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BillMinder] C:\QUICKENW\BILLMIND.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Compaq Internet Setup] C:\Compaq\Internet\InetWizard.exe /RUN
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Watch Dog Program] C:\COMPAQ\INTERNET\WATCHDOG.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QTaskStartup] C:\WINDOWS\INTUIT\SHARED\QCOM\QTASK.EXE
    O4 - Startup: BackWeb.LNK = C:\CPQS\BackWeb\Program\UserProf.EXE
    O4 - Startup: Reminder-cpq40301.lnk = C:\Program Files\Introreg\PIPELINE\REMIND32.EXE
    O4 - Startup: Forget Me Not.lnk = C:\Program Files\Mindscape\AGPrint\PMREMIND.EXE
    O4 - Startup: Event Minder Reminders.lnk = C:\HALLMARK\EMREMIND.EXE
    O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
    O4 - Startup: DeskFlag.lnk = C:\Program Files\Tiger Technologies\DeskFlag\deskflag.exe

    Click Fix Checked

    restart the computer

post back results along with a fresh Hijack this log

Will fixing or removing the above listed delete the program for the computer? Or will it just remove them from the start folder? This is a customers pc, and i would like to know what to tell them if it does.

Also, still having a problem recieving web pages. The modem connects to CoastalNet just fine. I can check the status of the connection, and it claims to be recieving AND sending data. The desktop icon for IE does not work, have to start it from start and then programs. AIM freezes the computer, I have to go into the task manager to shut it down. Does that have to do with what i a working on now? I'm not very good with networking yet, still studying. Thanks for all of your help.

Was there an earthlink installation setup disk? If so you might want to try removing the existing network connection and reinstalling it

There was no installation disk. The customer informed me that when her connection first start giving problems, she called the customer service for coastalnet, and they gave her a download for earthlink. She did what she was told, and thats when she begin to recieve the initial error message. I was told by the customer that is was not needed and delete and unistall the program. That message no longer appears, and thanks to your help, the computer does run a bit faster and better. She has nortons installed, but needs be updated, the quarentine log lists several viruses, and i would like to run a new scan, I try to update, and can't even connect to the udate site. I've reinstalled the dial-up adapter, but there is also a "PCI Fast Ethernet DEC 21143 Based Adapter" with the corresponding TCP\IP component. I find that wierd being that there is only a modem installed. Could that be the problem?

Is that still on the computer?

If so try running it over the top of the existing connectoid
You could also try right clicking and deleting the existing connectoid in Dial Up connections

You are a real sweetheart, thank you for you help. Connection works just fine, didn't need to run the earthlink download, just reinstall the connection. I had tried making a completely new connection through our service, and did not realize the modem sound is shut off by default. I was steady listening for it to pick up. But it's good now. Thank you.
