Ok here go's,

Recently a web page redirected, and hundreds of pop-ups came in. (I wasn't the one using the computer) Modem was turned off and all windows closed, opened explorer and it locked the system. Had to turn off the power, now windows will not boot...
Said "failed to initialize" something like VKD if I remember right. I know it wasn't a VXD, it was something I've never heard of.
Any way I tried using this opertunity to upggrade windows.... wrong I guess,... I ran Windows ME setup from dos.
All seems to go well but one error "C:\windows\system\shimgvw.dll" install continues normal but now all I get is the desktop picture and the mouse pointer, ctrl, alt, del and nothing is listed... No systray or explorer.
Safe mode is the same as that ^ but a "file download" screen comes up, and that allows me to atleast explore my computer a bit.

To sum up: Windows loads but no systray or explorer, only the background picture.

Any way to save my system? Or do I bite the bullet and format C: ?

Oops forgot to say: I started with Win 98, and now have ME (kinda)

BTW: I'm using a friends laptop right now but my system is in arms reach.

What do you mean you have ME kinda?????? Did ME appear to install completely and look for new hardware, etc?

Can you get to a dos prompt and type

scanreg /restore
and press enter.....

I see you edited about the time I started typing........so this may not apply.........but give it a check.

well ME installed but won't load right.

yes I can and have but the ME install cleared the old 98 reg. and I don't have a good boot from the new install.

I'll give it a quick try and get back to you.

What happens with the ME install?

Do you have data that isn't backed up?

Are you trying to overinstall ME or to a new directory?

As far as I can tell the install goes just fine, exept for the one error.

isn't backed up? on C:? yes thats why I want to try and save it.

overinstall to the recommended "windows" directory.

Also a new thought: could I load win 95 onto my smaller second hard drive and run diagnostics from there?
It only has about 120 MB free.

If you have data you need to save, I'd try the new directory reinstall.......

Yes. What ever you call it that is where it will keep all of its new files. Don't delete the windows directory until you have copied all of your Favorites, History, e-mail setings, and address book.
