I am running Windows XP, Office XP and IE6. I am connected to the internet through a cable modem. Since installing XP, I have been receiving pop-ups, even when I.E. browser is closed. This did not happen before with Windows 98. Also, I have Pop-Up Stopper installed, but it only stops pop-ups in I.E. when the browser is open.

How can I stop these. They're ve annoying. Most of the pop-ups are advertising for "instructions" on how to stop the pop-ups... for a fee. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Sounds like you may have some unwanted visitors

Download StartupList 1.51 from this site:

    http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/

Run the startup list and paste the results here.

I had recommended you download and install the free version of Zone Alarm. My post seems to have disappeared, unless there are tow threads to this.

Hey Balzac, I downloaded startup list and ran it. the results were rather lengthy. Is there something specific I should be looking for?

    Thanks

Hey Bassetman - thanks. I looked into zone alarm. the free version doesn't seem to cover pop-ups. I'm trying to avoid paying for additional software. I'll keep looking around.

These pop-ups are coming through an XP hole called "Messenger"
(Not windows messenger, but a service that is only supposed to work in an internal network, also called messenger)
Go to start/run, type services.msc, and press ok.
When services pops up scroll down to messenger and right click on it. Go to properties and disable in startup type. Press apply, then ok. That will stop it coming up again.
