If the System32 folder shows on the desktop, there may be an invalid entry in the Registry

    Start Regedit
    Go to both:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Double check that the values do not have incorrect, incomplete, or blank entries

    Thanks Bob,
I found one with no data - hpppt. Should I just delete it? It makes sense, because it started happening when I removed hp scanner software. I was looking for hp related items, but didn't look here.
    Thanks again!

This looks fishy as it has no executable showing:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpppt]

    Thanks to all,
Removing the hpppt from the registry did the trick!

Typically that's all it is. A bogus entry in the run section of the registry.

I have a similar issue with a machine at home that was given to me. Windows 98, another annoying window on start up was of97spec.ini in Notepad. I stopped that from happening by moving that file into the Micorsoft office folder. Now a new one opens automatically - "Help Topics". Do you know how I can stop this one?
    Thanks

efh, post your question along with a HijackThis scanlog in either the Win98 or Security forum.
