I'm having a small nightmare with thumbnails for jpg & gif images.
(I hasten to add then are not porn! :)
Windows would show me a thumbnail of any picture I selected in the corner of the window with file information. I'm sure you all know this.
But then when I downloaded Quicktime it came with a picture viewer. That monster stomped it's way onto my hard drive and reassigned all my image files to be opened only with itself.

That wasn't too much of a problem, as I reassigned the images to open with explorer again. But now these files will not show a thumbnail, although they do still show all the other information. Any file running in picture veiwer does thumbnail. But now I refuse to use that program on principal!!

I think the key is hidden within the windows part that asks what program gets used as a basis for thumbnails. But I can't find it no matter how many options or properties sections I try.

There is a registry patch that can be applied that should fix either the "preview" (individual file) or folder/thumbnails (whole folder), which ever you are referring to. The terms are confusingly interchanged even by MS.

Try the "Thumbs.reg" file here. It can be downloaded as a zip file, unzip and double click to merge it.

(And welcome to the board, by the way)

    Hi,

Thumbs.reg most often fixes the problem by restoring the Windows file associations for the file types in quiestion.

However, if that doesn't fix things, try entering the following in the Start/Run box :

    regsvr32 thumbvw.dll

    you might also try:

    regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll

And take a look at the following MS article:

Image Previews Not Displayed in Windows Explorer

    Good luck,

Just posting to say thanks for the advice from you both.
Putting the thumbs registry back in worked a treat so I luckily didn't need to add any lines to anything.

(If it isn't just clicking a mouse I get rather lost!)

I'm still amazed that anything to do with my computer worked first time! Much respect guys!

Thanks for your help and advice. My frustration ends!
