When opening a folder, the folders or files within it are arranged as large icons. I'm tired of amending to list format (my preference) each time I go in and would like the default to be a list. How do I change?

When in Explorer, adjust the format of a folder to your preference. Then go to 'tools' in the task bar (I don't have an English version of windows, so bare with me if the names of the functions aren't correct.... The 'tools' thing is next to 'help'). Then choose folderoptions.
There you click the second tab and click the 'use on all folders' button (or something like that). And also make sure that the 'save format of every folder' is checked.

That should do it, I think....
