I still have a Win95 system in my collection, and its doing a good job. The problem is that with Grisoft AVG 7.1 gone, and the replacement 7.5 does not support Win95, what are the options (freeware or feeware) for antivirus software ?

There must be thousands of Win95 system users with the same problem & question.

    Thanks

    DJT

Hi, All I can say is there it is....
you could become world famous if you try what it shows and it works...:p (y)

If the computer has the needed or above needed hardware it may work when you add the library files....I don't know neve tried here.

The author of Lightspeed's page seems to be claiming that he got AVG 7.5 working on a 95 system (see 'Security' on his page). If he is incorrect (or was just lucky), it appears that Avast! 4.7 still works with 95.

This all began when Grisoft did not clearly communicate the 7.1 to 7.5 upgrade. It is so unfortunate that Grisoft communicates so poorly, imagine all the stressed folks out there wasting time and effort on this activity, and as it turns out, unecessarily so.

I recently had a chance to attempt install of AVG 7.5 (on behalf of all the Win95 users out there). I am pleased to report that I have it working. The email distribution from tech guy Mike on this topic was helpful and I will add it below.

    Basically;

    1) go to the web site per email below
    2) find & download the executable file, " avg75free ,,,,, .exe " (remember the location on your system)
    3) execute (run) the program which can be done by; 'start', 'run', 'browse' to find the file, and 'run'. Or use windows explorer.
    4) during the install you will need some free disk space (could be in short supply on older systems)
    5) during the install, use 'REPAIR', not 'INSTALL' per email note below
    6) likely, if 7.1 worked, then 7.5 will work

    Thats it.

    Thanks for all the support.

Lets put this into the "Resolved" category.

    from tech guy Mike -

Grisoft offers a free anti-virus for home users called AVG Free. (Businesses are required to purchase the commercial version of AVG, but it's very affordable!)

If you already have AVG installed on your computer, you may get a warning that you need to upgrade by January 15, 2007. Most people are currently using AVG version 7.1, but you are required to install the newer version, 7.5. Here is how to upgrade to the latest version of AVG Free:

    1. Go to www.free.grisoft.com
    2. Click on the "AVG Anti-Virus Free" link near the top.
    3. Click on the "Download free version" button near the middle.
    4. Under the Windows heading, click on the link that starts with "avg75free_..."
    5. Click on the "Open" or "Run" button that appears.
    6. When the Setup program runs, you’ll have to click Next and accept the license agreement.
    7. When it asks you to "Select Setup Type", choose "Repair Installation" and click Next.

Having troubles? Head over to http://forums.techguy.org/ and post your question, and always remember to keep your antivirus up-to-date!

Hi, Very nice of you to post this solution. Was there anything you saw, that has this method only for win95, or could a win98 user, also simply upgrade this way? I'd think that would work.

This would work with Win98 as well.

    UPDATE

I just installed AVG 7.5 on a Win98. It appears that some improvements have been made in the install. For example, it now auto-detects an existing AVG 6 and takes care of it, and then goes on to install AVG 7.5. So now you dont have to choose "Repair" vs "Install".
