Something happened with my winamp and I dont know why. Everything was good and I had lots of skins I downloaded, and you know how they automatically install? Well for some reason I cannot get skins anymore, now when I download them, they run inside winamp, like you just see the name of the skin inside winamp but you do not get the skin!!! Someone said i have a file association problem and I should uninstall it and reinstall it...so I did....same problem exists....I DIDNOT however, re-download it...would this make a difference....does anyone know how to fix this so i can enjoy new skins???????

Don't use the skins in Winamp myself, but do these installed files have a .wsz extension? They should end up in the c:\Program Files\Winamp\Skins folder

And if you go to Folder Options > File Types is wsz listed there and configured to open with Winamp? I may be just shown with an icon as "Winamp extension installation file", but you should see the file type wsz listed as the extension.

    http://www.winamp.com/nsdn/winamp2x/dev/skins/zip.jhtml

Also when you look at the File Type in Folder options, the Action assciated with it should say install in bold. There is no check in the "confirm open after download" either.

I haven't looked into this before, but are you downloading the right skins for the right version? They appear to have separate downloads for the Winamp 2 series.

    Yup!

Winamp3 skins with the .WAL extension
Work with Winamp3 only, not Winamp 2x
    http://www.winamp.com/skins/

Winamp 2.x skins with the .WSZ extension
Work with Winamp 2.x, partial functionality under Winamp3
    http://classic.winamp.com/skins/

If you are using Winamp 2.x, then make sure you're downloading skins from the 2nd url.

Also, for further help/info, see this

:( Thanks guys but thats not it...I read at another forum somewhere(of course I forget where) that lots of other people have experienced this, but I dont know why. I am downloading the right skins, I even tried downloading ones I already have and the same thing happens, they show up in the play area, like youre playing a song. But you dont get the skin. Its weird.

Well, look, I'm also a moderator at the Winamp Forums, so if anyone can help you, it's me ;) :)

First of all, please confirm which version # of Winamp you are using.
Also tell me what your Windows OS is.
Also tell me what your internet browser & version is.
And we'll have this fixed in no time at all :)

btw, if you're using Winamp v2.x, did you check out that link I posted?

Thank You!!! I am giving you some info. also I do remember when the problem started, this probably wont be very helpful, but I remember it started when I was trying to clean up the computer myself:( and I uninstalled and deleted lots of stuff....sorry I just dont remember what....but after that this started happening with the skins. So I was thinking I deleted something winamp needs. OK here is my info:

I am running winamp version: 2.80

and here is the computers info:

    Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998
    Full OEM CD /T:C:\WININST0.400 /SrcDir=c:\cabs /IS /IZ /II /NR /II /C /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    IE 5 5.50.4807.2300

    Gateway, Inc.
GenuineIntel Pentium(r) II Processor Intel MMX(TM) Technology

Windows-managed swap file on drive C (558MB free)
    Available space on drive C: 558MB of 4102MB (FAT32)
    Version 5.50.4807.2300IS

    Thanks for the info.
Hopefully, this will be easy to fix . . .

    Close Winamp

Go to: Start -> Settings -> Folder Options -> File Types tab
(also accessible via: My Computer -> Tools)

    Scroll down for and hi-lite:
    Winamp Extension Installation File (WSZ)
    Click: Edit

    Under "Actions", hi-lite "Install"
    Click "Edit"

The app used command line should be:
    "C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe" "%1"

    (use copy+paste if needs be)

For Win98, "Use DDE" should NOT be checkmarked

    Click "Okay"

Back in the original "Edit" box,
    hi-lite "Install" again
    Click "Set Default"

    Note:
If "Install" is the only Action in the list (which it should be by default) then it will already be the default action (in bold text) and the "Set Default" button will be grayed-out . . . so don't worry about this.

Make sure "confirm open after download" is NOT checkmarked.

Click "Okay" to close the Edit box

    Before you close Folder Options,
    click the "View" tab.
Scroll down the list of options a bit
Make sure "hide extensions for known filetypes" is NOT checkmarked.

This is for troubleshooting purposes which may become apparent later.
If required, I'll explain exactly why in a follow-up post.

Now click "Okay" to close Folder Options

Under normal circumstances, your problem should be fixed.

If not, then post back here and we'll move on to the next step.

ps. make sure you're downloading *.wsz skins from
    http://classic.winamp.com/skins/
