If I understood your question correctly,
Open up Internet Explorer
Click Tools> Internet Options
Click on the "Advanced" Tab
Scrool down the list (a little over halfway down) there should be a "Multimedia" section.
Ensure the checks are in "Play Sounds in web pages"

I did what you suggested and the selection was already check marked !!
just as I was doing this I received TW56 suggestion to :
........... Go into windows media player and find the options or preferences. Uncheck the formats that you dont what media player to open "
I have posted a pict to ensure this is the correct place .....

Just uncheck the file types that you do not want media player to open.Select apply then ok.
On the first jpg just follow the instructions to uncheck what options you dont want media player to use.
