Situation: I have inherited (from trusted source) a Maxtor 120 Gb HDD (type 6Y12OPO) formatted to NTFS which has a redundant copy of Win XP Home on it but no other data/programs. I have put it in my system and it dutifully showed up as the D drive but properties only shows 114 Gb free space with 607 Mb used (- ?? the unwanted Win xp home folders)
I know this disk is 120 Gb (native unformatted) - is the copy of Win XP on the drive reserving the 6 Gb for itself ??, eg with protected MBR etc.
How do I get the missing disk space back - or can I ??. I'd like to retrieve most of it as I would like to use the disk for data storage and backups, but not before I've cleaned the disk fully.
My system: Athlon 2400, C: drive IBM deskstar 21 Gb HHD NTFS formatted, MSI KV4VL MBoard, Win XP Home OEM.
Any help or advice gratefully rec'd, Cellfreak
