A few days ago when I booted my netbook I noticed that the taskbar, start menu, etc. had all gone back to Windows Classic theme (however the Welcome Screen stayed as XP, as did the 'Turn Off' and 'Log Off' dialog boxes.) I resarted and it booted with the XP theme.

However, when I booted yesterday, it was back to Windows Classic. I was also having some WLAN trouble so I simply shut down. When I turned it on today the same thing has happened, Windows Classic again.

When I go to Control Panel > Display > Themes, I am given no XP theme option, nor am I given one when I go to the Appearance tab.

    Help appreciated.

Try doing a system restore point back before this issue began.
Have you scanned your computer for Malware or Viruses?

If the Default XP theme was somehow deleted then click
this link to download and install it. XP Default Themes

    Hope this helps,
    Jim

Yes, I've scanned with both MBAM and Trend Micro Internet Security Pro.
Both turned up no results besides the usual couple of tracking cookies.

I'll try restoring to about 4 days ago and see if that fixes the problem.

EDIT: The last restore point is from a week ago, however problems only started within the last 3 days, should I still restore?

    Alright, will try restoring now.
Also, I can't recall doing anything that may have deleted the XP theme. I haven't touched any system files / registry entries / etc, and I haven't even changed any display settings in around a month.

    You might have been HACKED.
I think I got hacked on the 9th of this month by some JERK who deleted my Email account while I was sleeping. I called my ISP and they had no idea how it got deleted.
All I had to do to fix it was re-create the account in Outlook Express.

Restored to the 5th June, problem still there >_<.

Also, the WLAN trouble I was having came up again, basically when I open the Wireless Connections window it contains the message 'Windows cannot configure this wireless connection', WZC, etc.

Had to restart twice before wireless would connect, as far as I know it's only my computer doing this, two others are connected and have had no problems.

    Could these two be connected?

eloisek, I have absolutely NO experience with wireless connections.
You'll have to ask one of the TSG experts to help you with that.

Did you download and install that Themes zip file?
    Install the file to:
    C:\Windows\Resources\Themes
It should replace your lost themes.

The link you provided is broken.

I'll post in the Internet & Networking board about my connection problems, would it be better to write it all again or just link to this post?

    Thanks.

As for the connection problem, just write it all again in the Internet & Networking board.

    Sorry about the broken link.

    Ah, of course.
My knowledge is elementary but lacking in several areas, i.e. teh intranets.

Other than the hacked theory, do you have any other ideas as to why this happened? Thanks for the link, by the way :)

EDIT: Error messages "No files to extract" and "File is corrupted or damaged" when attempting to extract and open .zip file respectively. Grr.

    I sure don't.
I think it's odd that I got hacked 3 days ago and your issue started 3 days ago. Hmmmm.

Just to add, following your 'hacked' theory, before I updated my antivirus from Norton to Trend Micro, I was reciving alerts from Norton literally every 2 minutes about a 'blocked intrusion attempt' and things like that, but Trend Micro hasn't warned me of such thing, which makes me think it's not blocking these attempts?
