what folder do i put my webpage in when i go from my xp box with http://ipaddress i get the apache page but i cant find it to replace it with my index file

should be /var/run/apache/htdocs

what do i do my httpd sevice keeps failing on startup?

hmm check your /etc/hosts file to make sure you have a listing for that machine. also in /var/log/apache/ there should be a error log that will tell you what is giving the error. Look at that.
