Ribbon cables for DVD/ROM and hard drive

    Are the ribbon cables for the DVD/ROM drives the same as the ones hooking up the hard drives? In other words, are they inter-changeable or do they have different pin-outs?

    As far as I know, I'm pretty sure they're the same. I've been able to interchange them, so I think they must be.

    They are the interchangeable. However there are two types of these IDE cables - both are 40 pin but one has 40 wires and the other has 80 wires. The 80 wire cables are required for transfer speeds over 33Mb/s. The 40 wire cable cable still works just limits the transfer speed.
