The network I am currently using only allows one device to be connected at any one time, regardless of whether you use a switch or not. Could I connect a router to the wall socket and then use multiple devices with the router? In theory the router should only appear as one device in every aspect even with several devices using it, correct?

Your university's IT department is in the best position to answer this question. Many schools disallow routers on their network.

Obviously they will probably state that I am not allowed to do it, I'm asking if it will most likely work.

If it is so obvious to you there was no reason for you to ask us. Closing.
