Hey guys. Been awhile since I posted. Just been busy the last few years.
SO I have an interesting problem and anted to poke around here for some advice/suggestions.
I have Spectrum internet, 400/20 pkg, Cable ISP. A ethernet and wifi speedtest will almost always be around 410-440 DL / 20-23 Upload.
Speeds seem great when it works.
My issue is at COMPLETE RANDOM I can have issues downloading game son the ethernet on my desktop, Steam mainly where I will get as low as 1 or 2 mbps and then other times ill get 30+ through the Steam Client. It VERY rarely affects my other like Origin or uPlay, but it can in some instances.
I just replaced the ISP modem about 3 days ago, which is the 2nd replacement in about 6 months trying to track down the issue. Well so far speeds both wireless and ethernet are as noted above (440/23) in general.
However I will have issues here and there with my speeds being severely inconsistent both wired and wireless. I had a fight with the ISP over the phone other day and demanded they replace the modem and sure enough its working way better noe on my other devices like firestick and smart tv and phones. COmputer working ok so far but wanted to know why I keep having these intermittent issues. ALready had a tech out about 2 months ago and redid wiring and has really good signal Outbound/Inbound.= from ISP to modem.
MY MAIN QUESTION IS:, How would I rule out my router as being an issue here 100%? I am almost positive its NOT the router. router is a Netgear Nighthawk (R7200 i think) and have never really had any issues with it over last 2-3 years ive owned it. Just did a FW patch on the router other day as well seeing if would help speeds, but didnt help till I replaced the modem, yet the sales lady at ISP tried to tell me my router might be issue, but I explained to her I had no real issues with router at all since owned it. I think its cause they dont take good care of the modems and thats what makes it an issue.
How can I find out for sure whats going on anmely with Steam and my inconsistent connection and fix it for good?
I do know hard drive speeds can affect downloading for games cause I can only downlaod as fast as HDD works, but my brother who has a different ISP literally 3-4 blocks away has no issues with Steam at all, so thats why Im thinking its my ISP/modem here and there.
Hey Metallica
can we see what you computer is doing? Can you Download and run and then post. https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download
To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:
In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot dialog box. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.
Power everything off - to include unplugging the computer from the wall. Disconnect the cable between the router and the modem. Connect your computer's network cable directly to the modem. Power on the modem, wait for the lights to settle down. Then power up the computer and see how it works.
I have charter/spectrum with the 400mbps service. Their modems are somewhat quirky in that if you want to connect the modem directly to the pc, make sure you leave the modem unpowered for a few min prior to connecting.
Connecting directly to the pc will remove the router from the issue. I had a similar issue in that my service was supposed to be 400mbps however on any speed test, I only received 100mbps. After numerous resets, checking directly with the modem plugged into the pc, I called customer service and they scheduled a tech to come out and have a look.
Well, on the day he was supposed to come out, I checked the speed in the morning; still 100mbps. The tech was scheduled for 15.00 SO at 13.30, I thought why not test again. Believe it or not, I got approx 450mbps. Repeated the test a few times and it was consistent 440~450mbps. Called and cancelled the appointment; it has been fine ever since.......
Hiya CRj, Terry and Zx10. Yea I have been very hectic last 12-18 months or so. As for the thread,
I have removed router from equation already multiple times to no avail. thats what prompted me to have a tech come out about 6 weeks ago and found a "slight" wiring issue with a bad fitting was fine for weeks afterwards but now starting to slow down again on certain things. I am really starting to wonder if it may be a related issue to something with Steam itself as i dont really have ANY issues streaming hd/4k content on either of the 2 smart TV's, or the smart phones and my wired desktop has no issues either EXCEPT for when downloading games through Steam. RARELY, I'll have an issue with Blizzard but it doesnt last long. Steam has been plaguing me for months, just not till here recently have I had the time to look into it. (was previously working 60-80 hours a week, 7 days a week)
Just did a FW update on router recently and that helped fix other issues that were sporadic, but the Steam issue is still persistent. ANd I am on like the 3rd modem in say....8 months.

Not sure what yours is? Modem Reset? Mine 198.168.1.1 I just type this in the URL adress bar and gives me full access to every function the modem controls, can change or check everything there, also the option to reset, if requires a password which in most cases is "admin"
To access a router, you must know the router's IP address and the administrative user's password and username.
To request a connection to the router, enter the IP address in a web browser-http://192.168.1.1, for example, and hit enter
Make sure you're using the correct IP address. Then reboot the router, disable the firewall, and reset the router to factory settings.
I have already done all these multiple times in the past. But thanks for the idea. I highly doubt its anything on my end, at least on my internal network. I'm REALLY starting to think it's an ISP issue....
Open a Command Prompt and run tracert www.steam.com, or whatever the server is.
Do this (maybe multiple days) when you are not having slowness, when you are having slow downloads, and ask your brother to do so also.
When you compare the outputs you may find that the server resolves to different IP addresses, or that the routes taken are significantly different, or that some intermediate hop is taking "too long."

Don't forget that ISPs only state the maximum download speed. No ISP ever guarantees that value. Because of that they probably won't do anything as long as you get close to the advertised speed most of the time.
In theory competition should force ISPs to upgrade their systems as needed to keep their customers happy. Unfortunately, at lot of people don't have the luxury of competing ISPs or have ISPs who don't seem to care even if they have competition.
Yes but there is also a MINIMUM amount of speed that is required to be between different packages as well. SO if you have a 200/20 pkg and upgrade to the 400/20 pkg for example you minimum speed of say 320 or it cant really be considered a "fair upgrade"
Seems to be an issue with one of my local steam servers. I switched from it and back to it and slowness came back. Not sure what Steams deal is but it definitely appears to be from their end.
I think at this point best alternative is to search for different ISP as this happens all the time, and my brother connects to same steam server, (Confirmed by tracert) and has no issues.)
Thanks for the help. Sorry for delays but been really busy
