My computer is running very slow and I know the reason is because too much stuff is running in the background. I am running Windows XP SP2, AMD Athlon, 2.17 GHz, 512 RAM. How do I know which programs/process to prevent from starting when my computer starts up? I know of a few I can eliminate, but don't know what many of them are. I know how to go to START/Run/msconfig and disable some of the start up processes. I just am unsure which ones to eliminate. I guess maybe a better question would be which processes do I need to make sure are running for my computer to work properly? If you can help, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Post a HijackThis log and we can recommend which ones to delete. It's original purpose is to identify bad stuff but is also useful for this.

Go here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Post the contents of the log file here.

Basically leave things that will not work otherwise such as antivirus, third party firewall, scanner, spyware remover and remove programs and devices such as Ms Office and soundcard that do not need to run in startup.

I am listing below several of your startup processes that could be disabled or uninstalled, along with a description of what they are. But the decision what to do with them is of course up to you. Most are applications that check for software updates or index your hard drive. You might also considder ditching Yahoo toolbar, Google toolbar, and Windows Live toolbar if you don't use them.

The preferred method for deleting unwanted programs is using Add/Remove Programs. PC Decrapifier will also remove many of them.

Thanks so much, Frank. I will disable some of these and see if that is the problem. I also have something running from RealNetworks. I thought I had disabled it but I still get a popup and icon in my systray when I startup. I will try uninstalling it from Add/Remove Programs. Thanks again.

You can temporarily disable the items I posted using MSCONFIG. That way you can restore them if you disable something you want to keep.
