Installing the sata drive via floppy disk during winxp setup got me on sata mode but the pc kept freezing every so often. During a resize job in partition magic 8 the pc froze and now i cannot access my data as a result. Reinstalling windows using the sata drive but set to emulate ide works fine until i installed the sata driver in windows because the pc freezes again.

My board is an Asus a8r-mvp mb (crossfire ready) supporting skt 939 processors.

What is causing the freezing ? is it a configuration problem or is my drive not up to the task of running in sata 2 mode ?

    Assistance appreciated

Does the drive have jumpers to change transfer rates?
Does the mobo support sata 2?

It supports sata 2 as there are 4 sata ports on the board, according to the manual. in the bios it comes up as 'serial ata controller' (enable/disable) and the mode is either pata or ahci mode

Sata must be enabled in bios and the drive hooked up to the first sata port
