Does it eventually respond or does it just say "not responding" for ever? You might have a network drive mapped that you can no longer reach

Where is the Default location that you are trying to save to?

If it is a network drive or USB device that is not there then the system is trying to find it.

    Any warranty left from Acer?
Let's rule out spyware...download, update install and run a complete scan with www.superantispyware.com and tell us what you find.

then next step I would run memtest86 on the ram first. www.memtest.org
Makes a bootable floppy or cd and you boot to it. Bear in mind the objective is to run 4 complete tests and each test takes 8 passes so this will take 3-4 hours. If you have any errorsd at all you have the answer.
