How can I avoid losing all email files when reformatting hard drive?

Save all your .dbx and .wab files.
Copy them back after the reformat.

OE is very obtuse in this area in my opinion, and I dumped it years ago in favour of Eudora.

Thanks Deke, but I think Welmore might like them, not me.

I would not use OE even if paid to do so!

    Not nearly enough.

In this day and age, I equate using OE for email as equivalent to dressing up in a deer costume with a target on the chest, and going hunting in the bush where there are lots of other deer hunters.

I am still stunned that most people still don't realise there are less complicated alternatives.

    Next offer?

...and now back to the question :)
here's some good reading, the OEBackup program - linked from the site - works well
    backup everything
then burn to cd or save somewhere else
then restore everything after the format
