Is there any way for me to NOT have to type .jpg after every picture I save? I just reinstalled win98se and I always get the unknown file graphic if I forget to type .jpg

thanks

What application are you trying to save from? If it's from IE, I have never had that problem. What version of IE are you using?

Why do you need jpg?

You don’t give much detail. If you are saving from the web, try saving as is. It will probably come up as a jpg or gif from the web. It isn’t a good idea to change a low resolution picture like you usually download from the web to a jpg if it isn’t one already. I usually go with the default.

Downloading from the web, do you not have a “Save as type” box? There should be a triangle/down arrow to the right of the box to choose other file types. Most other programs give you a file type choice the same way..

sorry,

i'm using IE 6.1. I right click, choose save, and in the text box i type a filename, and below that box, there is a box that gives the option, jpeg or bitmap, i leave it on jpeg, press save, and then i look in my documents and its not saved as a jpeg, just saved as a file.

It is saving it as a jpg. YOu probably don't have your folders set up to view the file extensions.

Rockn is correct. In Windows Explorer – View>Folder options>View tab and uncheck “Hide file extensions for known file types”. Under “hidden files” select “Show all files” while you are there.

I am having a problem that seems related. I am running Windows XP with IE6 (both fully upgraded using Windows updates). When I try to save a jpg from a website using "save picture as" it doesn't matter whether I use jpg or bmp, the file is instead saved as a jpe. The same dialogue box works fine with a gif and it is saved as a gif if I choose gif and a bmp if I choose bmp. So--it only is happening with jpg files. Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this problem?

I had the same problem with jpe. Here is the thread http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52330&highlight=jpe with everything that was tried to fix it. You should take a look at it. There might be a fix there for you. What I found on my PC was that it was a glitch in IE6. I tried the repair tool and it didn't fix the problem so I restored the previous version. After that was done I rebooted and then reloaded IE6 and have not had problems since.
