ScanDisk & Disk Defrag

    I cannot seem to get a complete ScanDisk as I start the program from the Accessories, System Tools menu and leave it run
    overnight. When I check it in the morning I get a message
    that reads something like " ScanDisk has restarted 10 times".
    I have attempted to close down backgroung running utilities and have shut down the screen saver function also. I have turned off my antivirus program also. Maybe I am not turning off all background utilities but then I am certain I do not know all that are operating. Also the Disk Defrag program also will not complete itself when I run that. They both had been working until a few months ago. Thanks for any suggestions.
