    Whenever I run scandisk (Windows ME) in the "thorough" mode, it keeps coming up with a message that something keeps writing to the disc and it keeps having to start over. This happened before and the problem turned out be spyware/adware that has since been annihilated :D . But recently it is coming up with the same message about re-starting over and over. I've downloaded hijackthis and was wondering if any running processes might be causing this problem. I'm also wondering what kind of nonsense is in my computer that I could happily live without! Thank so much!

    Forget all that stuff, just do it this way!

    Insert your boot-disk (if you don't have one, go to add/remove programs in the control panel and click on the Startup disk tab) and retart your computer.

    Select "Run computer with CD-Rom support" (you do NOT have to have the cd in the cd-rom drive) and wait for the dos prompt to come up. When it does, type this in "C:" and press enter. Then type this "scandisk c:" and press enter. Then just follow the on-screen instructions and BOOM! you now have a version of scandisk running that can not be interupted by other programs!

    Just remember, running in the deep mode takes a LONG time!!

    Good luck!

    Hi lionroars,
    Since you posted your Hijack log, I'll start with it first;

    There's no virus/trojans running, you have some mild spyware/adware.

    Run Hijack again, select all the following by checking the box next to them, then click 'FIX'

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\TOOLBAR\TOOLBAR.DLL/sa

    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWAY\MYBAR\2.BIN\MYBAR.DLL

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: My &Search Bar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWAY\MYBAR\2.BIN\MYBAR.DLL

    Special Instructions:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCHealth] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\Support\PCHSchd.exe -s <do not remove this one

    That is in response to the program PCHSched.exe running, it's a bit of a resource hog, , here's how to tame it;

    Open "Scheduled Tasks" in the Control Panel, double-click "PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection", click on the SETTINGS tab and set the task to stop if it runs for more than 5 or 10 minutes, next click the 'Schedule' tab, click the 'Advanced' button, change the "Repeat Task Schedule" from "Every 10 minutes" to "Every 3, 4, 5, or 6 hours" , just so it's longer, then it won't interrupt so often,
    ----------------

    Uninstall MySearch Bar from "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Look for entries called "My Search Bar", "My Way Speed Bar" and "Search Assistant - My Search". But if you remove this, the program that it came with will probably not function. . . it may have downloaded inside Grokster, Morpheus, Kazza or other P2P file sharing programs,

    -------------

    Even though Scandisk 'starts over' it actually runs swiftly through what it scanned already and catches up to the next ongoing cluster, in other words, if you did nothing, it will finish, even if it restarts itself, it only looks like it's failing but it's not,

    Secondly, you can run it in 'Safe Mode' to eliminate other programs entangling with it, but that's just asthetic, it will take an hour and a half or more anyway you do it,

    Thirdly, Ryanjoachuim points out running Scandisk in DOS which will eliminate all possible interference. You, however, are running windows ME, and to get to the DOS prompt you must have your boot disk,

    Insert boot disk, reboot, at command prompt A:\
    type: scandisk /all /surface

    :)
