Background: Purchased new Dell computer in December, installed it in January, unaware that free technical assistance is only good for thirty days. All equipment, old and new, properly installed and apparantly running.

Problem: Scanner output when sent to the computer will not accept modifications to documents as it did in prior installation. Possibly a "read only" situation?

Attempted corrective action: Call Dell--will assist for a price
Upgrade software with available HP 4100C program at HP.com--System states the program is not in the system. (Dell installed their own version?)

Remove installed software and replace with original which came with the equipment--Disk file informs me that it cannot be loaded with WindowsXP system.

Result: Use restore program and look someplace else while things remain the same. Also note that Scan Wizard will send output out in only one file format, Paint Shop Pro Image in one of four formats PNG, BMP, JPG, TIF. Previously I could send it to Word in Rich Text Format and had no problems.

Question: Is there anything I can do to solve this problem without buying a new scanner, as recommended, or going to Dell or HP at a cost? is there a better graphics or video software out there that will provide me with photo as well as document facilities?

I just put the finishing touches on a system for a friend and she had a HP scanjet that also didn't like the original software from HP but on HP's site there was a complete XP software download for her model that was 76.8 MB's if I remember and it worked perfectly. It wasn't an upgrade it unzipped to a file location then from there it was the usual setup.exe.

I'd bet from the size that it isn't just for that one scanner model.

I had the same problem with the same scanner and here's why your having problems with the scanner. The 4100c is not compatible with XP and instead of HP updating the software for the scanner, they issued a patch that had to be installed before upgrading to XP from 98 or 95. That's right, the scanners software is not usable with XP unless you upgraded to XP and first installed the patch prior to the upgrade.
If you bought your machine with XP already installed than I'm afraid your out of luck.

Well this is just weird. I have the file (sj664en.exe) at 78MB's which I downloaded on April 19th but now when I go to HP's site I can't find the download link for it. It's as if they removed it.

I'm trying all their search possibilities and coming up with zip, nada, nothing. I found with a Google search it leading to: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/scanners/software/sj664en.exe.html

I guess I got lucky on the 19th.
