How are you trying to "save" the picture? Are you using PrntScrn or something else?

Use GOM, VLC, KMPlayer; Cyberlink, and many more all have a snapshot function in the menu.

I did a screen capture by Printscreen, saved it Paint, cut out section I wanted to keep in Paintshop Pro and it worked fine.

tried using the button on my keypad, prntscrn, and nothing happened. no choices to do anything appeared on the screen. it was a commercially made dvd so maybe they block that type of thing?

that's correct, nothing happens until you open up PAINT, the Windows program and then paste it there, or click Edit, Paste.
Printscreen is waiting to be put into another program from the Clipboard.

you can use VLC player for taking screen capture. There is option called snapshot, whenver you want to take snap inbetween movie, just select that option. And its very user friendly.
