I'm looking for a screen capture utility with a specific type of functionality that's a bit challenging to describe. I just want to select an area of the screen and drag it to another part of the screen without some big application popping up prompting me to save, edit, modify or otherwise make any changes to the image. Just drag an area off to the side for general on-screen viewing.

I've downloaded and tried about 20+ screen capture utilities, and none seem to grasp this simple task. I'd write one myself if I could, but there must be something out there that does this.

Well, I know the functionality exists because I used an internally developed utility like it on a consultant's computer. You just clicked on the icon in the system tray and dragged a rectangle around an area of the screen and it was "captured" as a floating image on the desktop. No big application, no cropping, zooming, nothing. Just simple and straight-forward.

At this point I'd be happy with some new Google search terms to use to look for something. Searching for "screen capture" yields hundreds of programs that basically do the same thing, and none of which provide this simple functionality.

MomAries, that's definitely the type of functionality I was looking for.

Bumping for more ideas. I've installed about 20+ screen capture utilities, and none fit the bill yet.

DoubleHelix you are going to like 5clicks. It's easy and very flexible program. Very inexpensive as well, which is a good news isn't it?;)

Could you be speaking of somthing like what onenote does where you can drag over a part of the screen in a rectangle to capture it? If you have office 07 (i beleive enterprise and up i would look into that component of the system. Can be set to save the image in a clipboard.
