Screen flickering

Hello. My friend's desktop screen started flickering as she was writing a document on Word so she turned it off but then the computer wasn't starting to work. There are some important documents of which she doesn't have a backup and she's worried. What could be the cause of this and is there a possibility that her files won't be lost?

The cause of the flickering could be a problem with the cable ( it could be loose), the monitor itself or her Graphics card (if one exists).
Try to use the monitor on a different system, if possible to see whether it works.

As for the files. depending on the type of hard drive. You can get a external USB connector and try to attach it to a different system. Just make sure that it has a separate power connector. All 3.5" drives will require that. As USB alone isn't enough to power them up.
