this is to the monitors...what exactly are system resources???

    i have windows 98SE...
    128 megs ram..
i thought system resources referred to ram...

when i open programs the resources drop fast...
    then the system freezes...
    constantly...

even after i close the programs, the ram does not return...
it returns to a higher level but not to where it started...
    starts in the 80% range....
comes back up to low 70% with all programs closed..

    ctrl-alt-del even freezes...
i have to constantly turn the power off and then on again...
which i'm thinking ain't to good...

    ------
this was an email i sent to someone else asking for help...

    i just rebooted my system...
    system resources started at 86%....
    i opened outlook express...
    and it dropped to 75%....
when i opened this email, it dropped to 73%...
opened internet explorer browser, dropped to 69%
opened microsoft word, dropped to 60%...
opened my telephone software, dropped to 54%...
opened my work program, only dropped to 53%....

so it looks like outlook express is the biggest drain of 13% drop...
then microsoft word dropped it 9%...
my work program only dropped it 1%...

    i just closed all programs....
and system resources only came back up to 73%...

i originally started with 86%, after i rebooted...
    -------

i do have zone alarm and ad aware also.....
i refuse to turn off zone alarm...
i've gotten about 3000 hits on my computer since i turned it on...
but i don't think the freezing problem has anything to do with those...

the problems started when i downloaded netscape 6...
i was having so many problems that i disabled it, but did not think i had to remove it...
after that the problems were with netscape 4.5....

i'm on comcast and just recently started using internet explorer...
the problem is still there but not as bad...

    anyway...
what do you kool kats think...
    any ideas...

i still need an explanation of what exactly system resources refers to...i don't think it's just ram...

i was also wondering, if there is a way to free up or clean up the system resources while i'm working, without having to reboot....
it seems that something hogs the resources even after i close all the programs...
so, is there a way to clean up resources while working online.....

and finally, if the system does freeze, is my only option to turn the power off and back on again...
remember, that when my system freezes, all buttons on my computer freeze...

    thanks
