When I try changing the screen to be set at color 16 bit 600x800 from the settings panel, the screen crashes and says:

    Signal Error
    HF 0.0 Khz
    VF 0.0 Hz

Try updating the drivers for you're graphics/video card and you're monitor. I doubt it's due to the monitor itself, or you wouldn't expect to see error messages.

You have to download them. I'm not sure what Operating System you are using, but if you go to http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp and the click on "Graphics Driver", then "GeForce and TNT" and then you're operating system. Then click on the primary download link, accept the license agreement and, once downloaded, run it. Just follow the instructions it gives you.
