we have one of these for the Smart TV - which works great for that, but I thought I would be able to take it to my computer and copy my photos onto it. I have plugged it into my computer but am unable to see it as a drive - any ideas why?

No one can give any advise unless you tell us what equipment you're talking about!
Run http://static.techguy.org/download/SysInfo.exe and post the report.
Also the make and model number of your TV.
And the make and model number of the disk.

Does the drive have it's own power supply?

It would still help to know what motherboard and Windows versions they have.
