Say I have many files available for downloading (legal of course).

What would be the best way to go about creating (or possibly using one already available) a search engine to search these files and present the results to the user.

I would like to have some control over the results, with a download link and possibly a summary associated with the file.

I tried Google and a few others, and they only seem to search text within HTML pages, and only produce links to that page as the result.

Most CMS (content management systems) offer search engines as part of their main core product. If you are good with php or other similar languages, you can customize the output to show anything you want. If you are more on the "no code" side of things, try looking at Microsoft SharePoint services.

I found that I became more productive with the less M$ products I used (on Linux atm). So I think I'll stay away from SharePoint...

Also, I am trying to add this to an existing site. Doubt I'll be able to use a CMS at this point. Thanks for the reply though.

Create a database to store the file info in

    -id
    -name
    -description
    -version
    -etc

Create an admin panel in PHP or other language where you can upload files and add the details.

Then create a search page which simply searches the database.

It is actually a fairly straight forward job.
