search function does not appear to be working well...
Maybe it's me but... If I do a search using spell checker as keywords I get 100+ results with this being the first 5 or so.

I get similiar seemingly irrelevant results doing searches for other stuff

    Buck -

I've found that the search function does not appear to work particularly well with phrases.

In this particular case, you can get some more relevant results (and be better able to assess their relevance) if you tick off "show results as posts" (rather than "as threads") when you do the search.

While your method does produce slightly better results it never was like that... to the best of my losy recolection :)

The other night I was looking for something and it seemed I had to be quite specific with my keywords to get any thing relevant

when I try "missing open with window" why is the TSG coffee shop thread even included

easy to see why a newcomer would give up on searching real quick

I stand to be corrected on this, but it seems that this is related to the inability to search with strings in the current search function.

As some of the threads in Random get larger, they are more likely to contain all of the search words in a string like that (not necessarily in the some post but throughout the entire thread). They therefore get pulled up in the search results. The search by post technique seems to rank results by the number of times any of your search words appear in an individual posts, and therefore is more likely to return relevant results - at least this has been my experience.

I agree this can be frustrating. Ideally, it would be nice to have a Search which supports strings in quotations - guess we should ask Mike to add this to the "wish list" for future upgrades.
