My notebook is connected to the internet through a Linksys wireless router. When I connect to it I get message saying it is connected at full strength, but not secure. How do I go about making it asecure connection?
I am trying to network my notebook to my desktop. I followed all the instructions in the home Win XP network wizard, but they can not see each other. They are in the same workgroup. Where do you think I went wrong? Thanks for your time.
You secure a wireless network by enabling encryption--preferably WPA2 or WPA-PSK, but WEP is fine in most cases--on the router. Then reconnect the wireless computers using the same passphrase or WEP hex key.
For the second question I will suggest that you need to uninstall or properly configure for LAN access any 3rd party firewalls. Sometimes, but not always, disabling them is sufficient.
For more help, we need to know what you're trying and the results; e.g., what happens with 'view workgroup computers.'
I have a WEP/WPA key, how do I enable encryption on the router? I did not buy this router, it was given to me and I do not have a manual or a driver CD. Thanks for your time.
If you go to the site of the maker (Netgear, Linksys, D-Link, Belkin, etc) they will have have manuals you can either view or download on how to get this done.
With wireless you need to chnage the name of the SSID, chnage the password for the router, and enable MAC filtering. This will make you about 99% secure. Want 100%? Turn it off
Do not enable MAC address filtering. Enable encryption. With encryption MAC address adds nothing to security but does make your network more difficult for you to use.
Otherwise I agree with jmwills. I'm sure the Linksys site will have your user guide--probably under 'support.'
Thanks for the info. I need another question answered. My brother has a MacBook Pro and when I secure my wireless network his notebook can not see or connect to my wirless network. When it is unsecured his notebook sees the network fine and is able to connect to it. I checked all the settings on my router and I do not see why he can't connect to it when it is secured. Is there anything different I have to do to enable a MacBook to connect to my network? Thanks for your time.
No, it did not take 4 months. My bro just started trying to connect about 2 weeks ago. I am using WEP encryption, how can I check what encryption the Macbook has? I assume it supports WEP.
I can't imagine any reason that the Mac (or any other computer) cannot detect your network when it is secured via WEP unless you are also disabling the SSID broadcast.
