I have the Asus A7NX8-E deluxe mobo and I am using the onboard audio and it's ok, but not great in my opinion.

I have a three year old 2.1 Altec-lansing speaker system that I don't want to upgrade right now.

I get a bit of popping and digital type noise when I have it cranked up and the overall sound seems a tad harsh on some songs

Would a simple 30 dollar soundblaster live card get me much better results than the onboard audio I am using or do I need to go into an Audigy card for around 70 bucks?

Hi

I guess it all depends on what you need the sound for - my daughter plays CDs and a few games so I went for the SB Live. I actually disabled the SoundMax on the mobo - it wasn't bad but the SB is much better. I also use Altec Lansing speakers and sub-woofer - must be about 6 years old now - they still produce good quality sound.

The Soundblaster Live! is compareable to the SoundStorm audio on your board.

What you want to make sure is that you have the latest drivers installed.

There's a Remix package that includes all the latest drivers and the latest Mixer for NForce2 boards. You can get more info here as well as a link to the site: http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58807

These drivers are MUCH newer then those on the ASUS site and newer then those on the Nvidia site. They can significantly improve total system performance including removing most Soundstorm audio problems.
