I bought a Lenovo IBM thinkpad refurbished in 2013. Recently, it broke down on me. I got it diagnosed by professionals, and they said the mouse component is completely shot. I want to sell it, but I can't erase my old documents. I want to make sure my personal info on there stays private. Is there anything I can do, or am I stuck with it?

What model is it ? (there are many types of thinkpad).

Does it work apart from the 'mouse' ? Is it a small joystick on the keyboard and/or a trackpad ?

You could remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer, using a Usb adapter or cable, then erase everything on it, there are free programs that will do that very well.

Or simply remove the hard drive and sell it without it.

It's a t60. I'm not sure if it's the trackpad or joystick, but it won't stop clicking. Like it works, but I can't use it because it's hyperactively clicking on everything. I tried cleaning it and it didn't make a difference. The guys that diagnosed it said it wasn't worth saving. I guess the part it needs is expensive and the computer is so old. How do I remove the harddrive?
