I own a popular sports forum (I won't link to it) that get about 2 thousand posts per week and has around 700 members and I'm thinking about selling it so that I can focus on doing other stuff.

Sine a forum's content consists of the posts by it's members, is it moral to sell a forum? and do you think a forum's userbase will respect the choice of the admin to do so.

I've seen other forum's get sold without the members fussing, but when you have some members with 5-10 thousand posts.

It's a bit hard to justify, isn't it?

Of course I think there is nothing wrong with selling it. If your concerned about the users then obviously letting them know your selling it would be a good idea, morally, but not would not be required.

If your only selling it to give yourself more time to focus on other stuff, then why not appoint another administrator (one of your members you can trust) and focus on other things.
Perhaps your motive isn't time management, but money!

Thankfully, your parents or your preacher can tell you what is moral and not, not us.

What it all boils down to is you paid the bills for the site, it's your site. You can do with it as you please. Of course some of the members may not like it, but it's really not any of their business. If they're really upset, why don't they buy it from you?

I wouldn't say it's immoral to sell a forum - as awatson says, it's yours to sell. You are effectively providing a service for those who use it. Although it is the members that make the forum what it is, it's the person paying for the hosting and domain names etc that makes everything happen, so what you do with it is your decision.
