I want to send an e-mail to someone without showing their e-mail address in the "To" area. I have been trying to figure out how to do this with no success. Each time that I begin to fill-in their name, Gmail automatically completes the field but shows their e-mail address. I would like to just show their name, but not their e-mail address. Is there a way to do this? Thanks for any and all suggestions.

It will display whatever is in the first and last name fields of the contact.

Go to contacts.google.com
Edit the contact for this person, and change the first and last name fields to their name, not their email address.

DRPC, thanks for your reply. I checked the contact information, and the Name fields (first and last) have their first and last names in the correct fields respectively. The e-mail address is in the "E-mail Address" field. This has happened with other people in my G-mail contacts where the e-mail shows in their "To" field when I am sending e-mails.

There may be a "Display as" option as there is in Outlook?

DRPC and DaveA, it's funny, but when I send a message using Gmail through my phone, the e-mail address does not show up. But, when I try to send an e-mail message using Gmail through my computer, the address shows up.

They both use a different address book.
I do not use Gmail per say, look in the properties of the entry for the person(s) that you have this issue with?

Check for duplicates of this contact. Look also at the Frequently Contacted and Other Contacts lists at contacts.google.com.

When you edit the contact, click Show More. Check the File As field, as that will override the name if it's not blank.

This sounds creepy. You can't send an email message without knowing the person's email address, and the recipient will see your email address.

Amy,

He knows the person's email address and hasn't said anything about the recipient not seeing his email address. He simply wants the name of the person to display in the To field instead of the email address which is quite a comon practice.

You can control what recipients see regardless of their email app? When I look at the details of an email in Gmail, my email address shows up in the To: field because it was sent to my email address.

I have my GMails imported to Outlook 2010 and in the properties you can choose how your name displays to the recipients. For instance my Gmails are sent out from "Cookie Gal" and that's what they see when they get it but if they hover over the name they will see the email address.

For the To display you choose how it shows in your Outlook address book so if any of your contacts want they can change it say To: Amy with no email address displayed but it's visible when you hover over the name.

It makes sense that you can control how recipients see your emails. It doesn't make sense that the sender can control that.
