Is there a way I can attach an open document or file to an email without saving that document or file?

    Not that I know of.
The files is held in a temporary location in memory until
it is saved to the drive.
If you don't want the changes to be made permenant in
the original, use save as and use a different file name.
It will save the changes to a different file, which you can then
    attach to the email.
Then you can close the original and select to not save the changes.
Then you can just delete the new file after it is sent.
