Serial Port Failure with MICRON

I am using a MICRON Electronics, TransPort NX laptop. (Its all the IT department will provide). The OS is Win2K. Its running service pack 4. The serial port on the laptop does not function. I have tested communications using HyperTerminal, and all tests failed. I don't believe that this is a Hardware problem, since the issue is with EVERY MICRON. I believe it might be a conflict with drivers?

The MICRONs are using a PCMCIA 3COM Net adapter card to connect to a LAN. This card is functioning fine, but I believe it might be interfering with the serial port. I checked the BIOS, and everything is correctly enables, and there are no Infrared Ports activated. The interrupts are also correct (3F8/I4) The issue is with COMM1.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

The IT guy really has no input. He isn't involved directly, the only reason I mentioned him is because the department is too cheap to furnish me with newer notebooks. The MICRONs belong to a trainer in our company, and he has no idea why the serial ports don't work.
