Hello,

I'm having a real problem (2 problems) with my computer.

Firstly, I've noticed that [under processes] in my task manager, the file msmsgs.exe (windows messenger) is in there. If I end the process, it will return there in 2 or so minutes. I have removed it from my startup, but it still keeps appearing in my task manager (I have also gone into the system configuration utility and found that it wasn't included in my startup list). I think that a trojan may have infected it (i'm not too sure).

Secondly, I'm experiencing a really annoying issue, where my computer is unable to install/open screensaver files (scr) and application files, such as self extracting programs (many exe files). When I try installing any of these applications, an error reporting message comes up. When I click on 'Send error report', an internet explorer window comes up telling me that the issue is associated with the 'nVidia capture driver', and that there is no current solution to the problem. I only recently noticed this problem, and i is getting really annoying. This is preventing me from installing any new antispyware, etc. I've run Spybot Search&Destroy, Adaware SE Personal, and Norton Antivirus (2003), yet they haven't helped. Can anyone please help me??
Here is my HijackThis log:

Thanks for helping me.
I have a problem with your first instruction- after I download the MS Antispy and try opening it, the error message pops up saying:

'Setup for Microsoft AntiSpyware has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'

...and asks me to send the error report.
I was successful in downloading the latest HijackThis version. Here's my log:

View Hidden Files
Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".
Uncheck hide extensions
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these files

C:\WINDOWS\system32\usb.exe

Delete these folders

C:\Program Files\NavExcel

START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete
Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp
Empty the recycle bin
Boot

Run ActiveScan online virus scan

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Hello,

While I was running HJT, I couldn't find the value:
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

I'll post another HJT log. Also, before I delete anything, I just want to know what the C:\WINDOWS\system32\usb.exe is. Is it for my USB drives?
And, also, last question: When I prompt HJT to 'fix checked items', what does it do?- does it rectify any corrupted files?
Thanks.
Here's my HJT log (I didn't change anything... I just couldn't find a value):

Do as I said, fixing does various things mainly it is a safe way to fix problems in the registry

A new log with nothing fixed is a waste of time

I did a second check on usb.exe and it may be OK, leave it alone for now

Hello, I did run the pandasoftware activescan... it did post quite a few infected files. Still, however, after running the scan and deleting the specified files, I find that the same problem crops up: I can't really open any self extracting files etc, as an error message pops up. Here is the activescan log (the name's with a star* in front of it indicates that I did manage to find the file and delete it... the other ones I couldn't find).

Okay... this is the message that comes up when I try to run Microsoft AntiSpyware:

'Setup for Microsoft AntiSpyware has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Setup for Microsoft AntiSpyware. We will treat this repot as confidential and anonymous.

To see what data this error report contains, click here.'

It then prompts me to either send error report or not to. When I click on 'Send Error Report', an Internet Explorer window pops up from 'Microsoft Online Crash Analysis' explaining:

'Error caused by NVIDIA® Corporation: No specific solution found

Problem Description

An analyst at Microsoft has investigated this problem and determined that an unknown error occurred in nVidia Capture Driver. This software was created by NVIDIA® Corporation.

Problem Resolution

Microsoft has researched this problem with NVIDIA® Corporation, and they do not currently have a solution for the problem that you reported. Below is a list of recommendations to take that may help prevent the problem from recurring.

Contact NVIDIA® Corporation for support or product updates.
Additional Information

If this problem continues to occur with the latest product updates for nVidia Capture Driver, we recommend you obtain assistance and troubleshooting information directly from NVIDIA® Corporation.'

The thing is that this only started happening a few months ago (about 4), and I didn't realise the seriousness of it until recently (I got my computer early 2003).

Interesting error message

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
· Install ewido.
· During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
· Launch ewido
· It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
· On the left side of the main screen click update
· Click on Start and let it update.
· DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Run Ewido:
· Click on scanner
· Put a check by the following before you scan:
o Binder
o Crypter
o Archives
· Click the Start Scan button to start the scan.
· During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
· When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
· Save the report to your desktop
Post that log

I know I've seen that error before, but never with M$ AntiSpy.
Normally the resolution is to download nVidia's latest driver(s).

I installed the ewido scan and ran it in safe mode. I saved the log to the desktop, however, I can't seem to find the log on my normal desktop... is there anyway of sending my log from safemode to 'normal mode'?... because my internet is disabled on safe mode.

I ran the scan, saved it to my desktop, opened it up again and did a 'Save As' on both the desktop and a file... yet it did not come up in 'normal mode'.
By the way, what exactly is the 'Temp' file you told me to delete?... I wasn't too sure so I didn't delete every file that was inside it, because I found files such as:
- 2eb50.msi , 9aec2.msi, etc (Logitech Camera Installation files).
- DelUS.bat (not sure)
- control.xms (not sure)
- mmssetup.exe (msn messenger 4.7 setup)
- mun9.exe (not sure)
- SETUP.EXE (from the Installshield corporation)
- SETUP.INI
Should I completely delete the file?
