when i start my computer(Xp pro)
i get a msg saying that the system has recovered from a serious error
also when i click shutdown, screen goes black and the computer restarts
also i have Kaspersky AV,and it tells me it has detected Rootkit,in system 32,
i believe i will have to install OS again
    would that do it?

If you really have a rootkit, completely wiping the drive may be the only solution. Microsoft recommends this for rootkit removal since they basically install driver-level components that override the system kernel.

But, just in case this is a minor bug or easily removed one, post a log from HijackThis in the Malware forum and ask for help from the experts.
