several issues after reformating

    I recently had to reformat my computer, and after installing windows updates and downloading some of my old software i have had a few problems.

    First off, i have no sound. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my driver, but still have the same error "the device cannot be started."

    Secondly, i cannot setup my dual monitors. They worked fine before i was forced to reformat but now they both show the same thing.

    After you format a hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows XP, you'll discover that you need to install the drivers for some or all of the following:

    Display adapter

    Sound device

    Network adapter


    Windows XP has a large driver database, but it usually doesn't install all the needed drivers during the install process of the operating system.

    That's why you need to know what hardware is in your computer so you can obtain the drivers ahead of time and burn them to a CD-R.


    You need to go to the Dell support site for your particular model name and model number computer, then browse to the software downloads section and hardware specifications section.

    ah thank you this fixed my monitor problem.

    But i still cant get any audio.
