Using Windows 98 SE the shortcut icons all contain in the lower left corner a curved arrow. How do I eliminate this arrow? I have tried Tweakui but the arrows remain. Is it necessary to fiddle with the registry?

If it is a shortcut (not the full program) it will always have those arrows. You could copy the executable to your desktop, but that sometimes causes difficulties.

    helpless,

There is another program similar to tweakui that allows you to modify that particular setting and more. It is a free program that you can get from here

If you installed the Microsoft March 7 Security Update, it's caused by an 'updated' version of Shell32.dll.

Mosaic1 was one of the first to point this out as the cause.

In that case the fix is restoring your original copy of the dll from your Windows CD-ROM using System File Checker.

To Ancient one. I downloaded the file, made the alterations, and the arrows have all disappeared. An excellent and perfect result. Thanks a lot (from an octogenarian described as a junior member).

    FYI: Semmy

tweakui WILL remove the arrows from shortcuts but as Tony pointed out, you may need to reinstall the orig dll if you did the march 7 security update

I was just reading this and found out about tweakui. I have downloaded this and it unziupped four files, but i dont seem to be able to get it to run.

There is a cpl file, but when i click on it it says it needs to be run from the control panel, but it doesnt appear in the control panel window. Can anyone let me know what i need to do to run it?

    from: http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/download.shtml

In the Save As dialog box, choose to save the file to a temporary folder, then click Save.

Open that folder and double-click the downloaded file (tweakui.exe). This will create several new files in your folder.

To install TweakUI, right click the tweakui.inf file and click Install.

TweakUI will be accessible from your Control Panel
