    How do you verify that Windows is configured to show hidden files and protected operating system files?

    Here is a slick trick

    Go to your start menu and click on Help and Support
    In the search type " show hidden files" and hit enter.

    #2 in the list is Display Hidden files and folders

    The screen on the right tells you where to find and modify this information. Its the same place for showing system files.

    Go to Documents and Settings in Windows Explorer, your user, and then open it. You should note some folders with lighter shading than other folders as you click open possibilities. The light shaded folders were the hidden ones.

    1. To see if windows is configured to show hidden files;
    Go to "Folder Options" in Control Panel, click the "View" tab, under "Advanced settings" make sure "show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected Operating System files" is unticked.

    2. To see if Windows shows those files;
    Go to your Windows installation drive (prolly C drive), Check to see if "boot.ini" or "CONFIG.SYS" Or any such are visible albeit lighter shadings. If you see them they're "protected operating system files". Oh and they're also "hidden files".
