Shut Down After Dial Up

I'm no computer expert. I am trying to set my husband up with a 'new' old computer (something I thought would be a piece of cake), however each time I try to sign him on to the internet, I hear the familiar dialing sound, a pause as if the connection is being allowed, and then the screen goes to black and begins to re-boot.
I've found myself checking all of the obvious places like connection properties and modem properties but I have no idea how to fix this.
I am running Windows XP Pro and using a standard 56k ISP.
Is there anyone out there who can offer any suggestions before I become COMPLETLY frustrated?!?!

From your well explained description of the fault, I would suspect that its a modem driver problem, (the software that controls the modem, assuming its an internal modem) or even a faulty modem itself. Assuming its an internal modem and not one that sits outside the PC.

Internal modems (WinModems, Soft Modems, PCI Modems) rely 100% on the computers processor in real time to accomplish the task, if anything is "not quite right" hardware or software wise, it can cause all manner of problems.

If you know the modem make and model, you can download and run the software to install the correct drivers for the version of Windows that you are running.

Thanks for your quick response. Sorry that my description wasn't more advanced. I'm on my own computer (which is why I can post this message and read your reply). I don't know how I can download anything to a computer that I can't sign onto (my husband's). His modem is an internal - US Robotics 56K Voice PCI (it also tells me that it's a PCI Slot 5, PCI bus 2, device 12, function 0) whatever that means. I did a test on it and it said that it's working. I checked all of the settings and they look to be correct.
Thanks anyway for your help, it just seems like there must be some easy solution that I am overlooking.
