during the past 3 days, the optical mouse appears to be
    malfunctioning. (XP OS)

what started out as once in awhile is occurring like every
10 minutes on the computer now. the mouse disconnects
itself from the computer, ie the red light from the mouse
goes dark. i unplug the usb cable of the mouse from the
computer and replug it in and the mouse is working again.
but 10 minute later it disconnects from the computer. some-
times Xp tells me a USB device is malfuncting.

does it sound like its the mouse 99%? because optical mouses
are relatively new,i do not have expericne with the life
spans of them and how they do go bad.

Its a logitech brand ,about 16 months old

Could be the mouse, but it could also be the motherboard or even the power supply. Do any other USB devices act strangely? Check the motherboard for broken or blown capacitors, they'll look expanded, and may have brown cruddy stuff on them.

THE COMPUTER is less than a year old(although power
supplies can go that fast i understand)

Nay on other Usb devices, just the mouse.

i have heard people say optical mouses break within 2 years.
im about to run out and buy a new one,it seems like a no
brainer its the mouse. But like it says below:

Check the capacitors on the motherboard. There was some crazy thing where a guy stole a capacitor formula and sold them for really cheap, but it turns out they were messed up, and would go bad after a while...unfortunately, many motherboard manufacturers had already bought them, used them, and sold the boards that they were on. I had similar problems with my computer, until I saw that the caps were bad.
