My nephew is in Tanglewood this summer and has poor internet service. He has Verizon, btw. He needs to be able to Skype with his music teacher. Is it possible for him to do this with a mobile hotspot (if so, what should I tell him to get?).

If the cell service is good enough for voice it is probably good enough for Skype (voice). Obviously, video (if that's desired) requires better than minimal service.

I assume that he doesn't have a smart phone to make a test?

He does have a smart phone. FYI I'm asking for him -- I've never used skype and don't know much about it. I'm often the tech guy in my family, (though my skills are truly antiquated) which is why I got the question. But this is something I know absolutely nothing about.

So what can he do? Or buy?

I'm assuming from your initial post that his "poor internet service" is not his Verizon cell data service. Assuming also that the latter quality is unknown. If that is the case I suggest that before buying anything he uses the Skype App on his smart phone to test whatever he wants to do with Skype. For this he needs to get a willing partner (another student? music teacher? you?).

If the test works, or he is just eager to buy something without testing ...

If he does not want to use Skype on his phone or to use his phone as a hot spot then he can buy, as you suggested, a mobile hotspot that works with Verizon (assuming he sticks with Verizon). Using a mobile hotspot or his phone as a hotspot may require buying a "higher" data plan.

By using my cell data service.

You said he has Verizon and has a smart phone. From that I made the assumption that he has a voice and data plan with Verizon. Is that not the case?

My brother was under the impression that Skype required a Wifi connection. Ok, I'll forward the info, and see if he can figure out how to test it.

I finally was able to talk directly to my nephew. It turns out that even his cellular service is sketchy, so he's just going to do without skype. Thanks for all the help and bearing with my complete ignorance. I'm marking this as solved (well, resolved).

You're welcome. Too bad the internet service is so bad there.
