    Hello everyone,

    :censored:

    After enjoying my Toshiba Satellite a665 laptop for five years suddenly there is a major problem with booting. It is terminally slow and when eventually the desktop appears I wait for icons to slowly come up. As soon as I click on an icon it fails to respond.

    In Safe Mode it is a bit better but also there are problems at times with logging off which also stalls.
    I've run a Malwarebytes scan in Safe Mode which shows nothing. These symptoms started a day after some automatic updates were installed. I did note that the install was incomplete and the computer rebooted.

    At present I am hoping it is a case of corrupted data in boot or registry but do not know how to diagnose.
    The HDD seems to work but there may be some data recovery issues causing the computer to lag. It is unusable at present and some of the settings on my programs have been skewed up.

    Anyone give me some advice and/or tools to check the system safely before I take it to the repair shop?
    It does seem to be completely and utterly bricked up for some reason beyond the usual slow processor issues.

    Hi, run System File Checker.
    Click on Start - Search - Type cmd
    Right click on cmd.exe - select Run as Administrator.
    At the Command Prompt - Type
    sfc /scannow
    Press Enter.
    Let it run to completion - but do not close the cmd window.
    To save the log file.
    Copy and Paste the following in Command Prompt.
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
    Press Enter
    On your desktop you will see a text file called sfcdetails.txt
    It may take 2-3 times of running for all files to be checked and replaced-repaired.

    Thank you very much. Looks good.

    I am reading through the tutorials carefully. I will perform the System File Checker from Safe Mode. First, I need to allocate a time when I am not so busy and can concentrate. Furthermore, I do not have a back up copy of Windows but just homemade Repair disks which are not dependable. I have backed up most of my files onto external hard disk.

    It may be a few days before I get back on this.

    I will also post what I can hoping that it is not a hardware problem in which case I won't be able to.

    Thanks again for the help

    Hello again Blues Harp,

    I completed the sfc/scannow. The report states, "Windows did not find any integrity violations". I got the full sfcdetails textfile. How would you or I intepret the results? If you require posting here please tell me a preferred format.

    Thanking you

    Malwarebytes is not an anti-virus program.
    Do you have one installed - have you scanned your pc with it?

    ESET online virus scan.
    http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/
    Click on 'free one-time scan with ESET Online Scanner'
    Let it do a full scan of your pc - remove all found threats.
    Post the log files - they can be found here.
    C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
    ======
    Download Security Check by screen317 from.
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/securitycheck/

    Save it to your Desktop.
    Double click the install icon.
    If using Vista - Win 7 - right click the install icon and select "Run as Administrator"
    A command Prompt window will open.
    Let it scan the Pc - press any key when asked.
    It should now open in Notepad.
    Copy and Paste the result of the scan in the reply box below.

    Hi, I already have ESET installed. My version is in Japanese. It seems to be current but I'll check and see if it has been updated. After doing this I will do as instructed above.

    I notice that my MS Office and some device settings have been screwed up.

    Not sure what this means.

    Running programs, cleaners, scanners. That won't make it much faster. The computer is really old.

    Working in Safe Mode.

    Ran the above ESET scan. Found 2 infected files and removed. Cannot locate the logfile. Set the Show hidden files, folders and drives. Set the index but cannot find it.

    (My original ESET valid until 2019 has been disabled on this computer but seems OK on other one.)

    :sick:

    Apart from that, here's Security check logfile:

    Results of screen317's Security Check version 1.014 --- 12/23/15
    Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x64 (UAC is enabled)
    Internet Explorer 11
    ``````````````Antivirus/Firewall Check:``````````````
    Windows Security Center service is not running! This report may not be accurate!
    Windows Firewall Enabled!
    Malwarebytes
    ESET Smart Security 9.0.408.0
    Antivirus up to date! (On Access scanning disabled!)
    `````````Anti-malware/Other Utilities Check:`````````
    Java version 32-bit out of Date!
    Adobe Reader XI
    Google Chrome (57.0.2987.133)
    Google Chrome (SetupMetrics...)
    ````````Process Check: objlist.exe by Laurent````````
    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware mbamservice.exe
    `````````````````System Health check`````````````````
    Total Fragmentation on Drive C:
    ````````````````````End of Log``````````````````````
    I tried to turn on Windows Security Center but was told it could not be started. But I am in Safe Mode of course and limited to basic use.
    I am already aware that there are a lot of people asking for help. And I am conscious of the invaluable help sites English speaking techguys provide. Yes, just getting a new one - but this is an otherwise brilliant laptop in every way.
