I am on a Dell Dimension 2400 running Windows XP Home Edition. My computer used to be very fast, but not anymore. I need help. I do regular maintenance with defragging, using a registry cleaner, and running ad-aware, but the computer is still slow.

I noticed in the processes window of the task manager that I have a lot of things running but I don't know what all of them mean. Is there a site that explains what all these files are so I can know what I can get rid of and what I can't? Here is a list of what is currently running. I do have wordpad, firefox and task manager open at the moment but that is all.

    realsched.exe
    wordpad.exe
    AdobeUpdater.exe
    wuauclt.exe
    soffice.bin
    soffice.exe
    hpqtra08.exe
    firefox.exe
    Ymsgr_tray.exe
    ctfmon.exe
    alg.exe
    HPZipm12.exe
    jusched.exe
    SearchProtection.exe
    NotifyAlert.exe
    ashWebSv.exe
    hpqste08.exe
    WkUFind.exe
    askDisp.exe
    hpwuSchd2.exe
    taskmgr.exe
    ashServ.exe
    aswUpdSv.exe
    aawservice.exe
    explorer.exe
    tfswctrl.exe
    hkcmd.exe
    Support.exe
    mm_tray.exe
    svchost.exe local service
    svchost.exe system
    jqs.exe
    svchost.exe network service
    svchost.exe system
    svchost.exe local service
    svchost.exe network service
    svchost.exe network service
    svchost.exe system
    lsass.exe
    services.exe
    winlogon.exe
    csrss.exe
    spoolsv.exe
    PCMService.exe
    smss.exe
    wscntfy.exe
    mmtask.exe
    askMaiSv.exe
    System
    System Idle Process

Does anyone know what I can get rid of and what has to stay? Are there any hard and fast rules for me to follow here?

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HijackThis 2.0.2.

Close all open windows, then install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less.

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

Can you please tell me what is your computer's amount of RAM?

To find out, click on Start > Run > type sysdm.cpl

Under the General tab, near the bottom, you'll see your RAM.

You do have a couple of nasties in your Web browser though. You should get rid of the My.Freeze.com NetAssistant.

Thanks again. I have 256 mb ram. I'll get rid of the my.freeze files. Is there anything else I should look for?

Yes, you should look for a lot more RAM! 512 MB is a minimum for XP. I even recommend 1 GB.

You don't need all those Startup applications to slow down your computer:

Click on Start > Run > type msconfig

Under the Startup tab, uncheck the items related to the following entries:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelMeM] C:\Program Files\Intel\Modem Event Monitor\IntelMEM.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DwlClient] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dell\EUSW\Support.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"

    O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 3.1.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\program\quickstart.exe

    O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe

    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

You should also set your Windows Updates to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them". To get there, click on Start > Run > type sysdm.cpl. Select the Automatic Updates tab.

If I recall, the Dell Dimension 2400 desktop supports up to 2048 MB(2 GB) of RAM. You definitely need to add more because Windows XP will run like a snail with only 256 MB, no matter how much performance tweaking you do. Increase it to at least 1024 MB(1 GB).
